When the memory on your computer begins to run low, Windows starts to use blank space on the hard drive, known as "virtual" memory. It will begin to swap program code segments out of memory to the hard drive, and back again.This causes the system to dramatically slow down. It is possible to have too much memory on your computer. You won't benefit from having more memory than you need. Example: Putting 64MB of RAM in a computer with a system using Windows 3.1 is of no benefit as Windows will not recognize it or use it.
